Well-being

Children's well-being is an integral part of life here at Waterman. Across all year groups and in all aspects of the school day, we ensure children's mental health and well-being are central to everything we do. We have a variety of support and structures in place to allow for all children at Waterman to develop an understanding of their own mental health, and equip them with the tools to manage and strengthen their own well-being. Further details of how this is incorporated into different aspects of Waterman life will be added below soon. Additional support that we also have in place can be found under the well-being section of the website.

Mindset

Mindset has been a major focus in our school, especially since the pandemic, and will continue to be a focus across the curriculum. Each of our classes have a worry monster and box where the children can share their worries, through this our adults can offer support to ease them. In KS1 and Early Years, children are continuously modelled how to play and interact with their peers by an adult, to encourage a positive outlook of themselves. In KS2, children focus on how to overcome their worries, and the topics and books we look are specifically picked to help tackle these concerns.

Nutrition

Our school is in the process of applying for a healthy schools award to support children and families with nutrition. The children have access to a school allotment where they grow their own healthy food. Throughout the school, children learn the importance of eating healthy food to support their bodies and development. All children in Early Years and KS1 have access to a free fruit snack at play time and a free healthy school lunch to support a balance diet. Nutrition is also a focus within our HEARTS promise, where children are able to make different foods from many different cultures.

Lifestyle

Our HEARTS values are the centre of the lifestyle here at our school. Children at Waterman are given a variety of opportunities in order to support a healthy lifestyle. Years 1 to 6 take part in an enterprise week to help the children take ownership of their values. Children at Waterman are also heavily supported as they transition through different stages in school: from EYFS into KS1, KS1 into KS2 and especially Year 6 to Secondary School. Year 6 children have opportunities to visit their new school and our parents are supported with this transition too.

Movement

Movement and exercise are a priority at our school so our children can live a healthy lifestyle. All children at Waterman have access to weekly PE lessons, weekly yoga and weekly swimming lessons. During their lunch time, children are provided with practical equipment and games are run by midday assistants to encourage children to take part in exercise. Children at our school also have access to PE related after school clubs.
