Science

Curriculum Intent

We want children to be curious about the world around them and develop an inquisitive nature. They are encouraged to predict how things behave and why things happen, using Science to explain what is occurring and are given opportunities to plan, explore and test their own ideas. It is our intention that all children develop scientific knowledge that expands their conceptual understanding and sparks an interest in science beyond their own experience. We also value and promote a wide variety of role models across the scientific community and learn about their positive impact on our lives and the world.

Implementation

Children learn scientific enquiry skills systematically with opportunities to observe, explore, investigate, research and communicate their ideas. Child-led enquiry is a feature of each unit of the curriculum which allows them to develop their understanding of scientific ideas and begin to make sense of science as a way of finding out about the world. Pupil’s prior knowledge from the previous key stage and year groups is built upon sequentially with each unit having core knowledge that is learnt and built upon as the unit progresses. This core knowledge is fundamental to the planning and referred to throughout lessons. Progress of the children in regard to the retention and understanding of the core knowledge is assessed at the end of each unit using Kahoot quizzes.

Science is taught weekly, centred around a scientific question that the children all engage with and helps to frame the learning. Teaching and learning in Science facilitates scientific enquiry and pupils’ knowledge and understanding is strengthened through first-hand experience. Opportunities for talk, discussion, debate and sustained writing are built into the planning so that children can explain their findings and their learning in a variety of meaningful ways.
