PE

Curriculum Intent

We value Physical Education and fully recognise the importance it has on our children’s well-being at Waterman. We provide an inclusive, broad and balanced PE curriculum that mirrors the aims and objectives set out in the National Curriculum, ensuring that all children are inspired to succeed and excel in sport and other physically-demanding activities.

We teach children the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle and being physically active in our daily lives. We offer various after school clubs and sports competitions so that children are able to participate in sporting activity. We know that by doing so we are providing opportunities for our pupils to build resilience and embed values of hard work, cooperation, fairness and respect. We motivate and instill excellent sporting attitudes in our children as well as promoting and encouraging leadership through the PE curriculum.

Implementation

Our PE curriculum follows the aims and objectives set out in the National Curriculum. The curriculum is progressive and focuses on reinforcing key skills through each unit. Long term planning begins by focussing on fundamental skills and then moving onto skills and activities that can be used across different sports. We also use the LCP scheme of work to support our planning.

PE is taught by our own teaching staff and skilled outside providers each week. Our indoor PE learning focuses on either dance or gymnastics, using our hall space, and our outdoor PE learning is centred on fielding games and activities, team sports and other invasion games (for example hockey, football or basketball).

We provide opportunities for all children to engage in extra-curricular activities, during and after school, in addition to competitive sporting events. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also well-being. These clubs are run termly to further promote and encourage physical activity, from dodgeball to football to gymnastics and dance.

We also provide swimming lessons for our pupils – every child will have the opportunity to learn how to confidently swim and perform a variety of strokes as well as water safety.
