Forest Schools

Waterman's Forest School Ethos

At Waterman Primary School we believe that every child has the right to access the outdoors and to learn and develop through play and exploration.

Forest School allows children the freedom to become independent and confident learners by giving them opportunities to participate in practical activities outside the normal classroom environment.

It teaches children to use tools, explore, investigate and take risks, in turn building their confidence, resilience, self-esteem, creativity and independence.

Building these vital skills will support their social and emotional wellbeing and will equip them with the expertise to feel in control of their learning.

What is Forest School?

Forest School is a tailored program that is based on child-centred learning. It supports the development of building self-esteem, confidence and the understanding of taking ‘appropriate’ risks through play and hands on experiences. It allows pupils to learn new skills and further develop existing ones. The skills, knowledge and understanding that are acquired through Forest School are transferable to the classroom and beyond!

Forest School takes place in all weather conditions (unless they are deemed too dangerous ie. torrential rainfall) and the children need to dress for the weather (they will get muddy at times!).
