Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do you hold tours for prospective parents and pupils?

Yes, of course! We would love to have you join our school and we very much encourage school visits and tours. All school tours are carried out individually with parents and are led by a member of our senior leadership team, normally the Head of School (Mrs. Collison) and/or our Executive Head (Mr. Wry). To book a visit and school tour, please contact our school office.

  • How can I support my child with their learning?

The school greatly values the contribution that parents can make by supporting activities at home.

Homework is assigned at the start of each term on a homework grid. The homework is to be competed bi-weekly in their homework book (provided by the school). Each task can then be ‘signed off’ by you as a parent/carer and your child’s teacher will regularly review your child’s homework.

We also operate an Every Child, Every Day reading initiative and we very much value parents’ support with this. We expect every child in our school to read for a minimum of 10 minutes with an adult (parent, grandparent, family member, etc…) and have this recorded in their reading record every night. Reading records are monitored robustly by school leaders and class teachers as we know the significance that reading every day can have on every child’s progress and development.

Other things you can do with your child at home can include learning their times tables (encourage usage of Times Table Rockstars) and asking them questions about their learning.

We also operate and hold regular parent workshops and curriculum open mornings – opportunities for you to learn more about teaching, learning and our school curriculum, which we encourage all parents to attend.

  • How do I get information about my child’s progress?

We inform our parents, pupils and families about the children’s progress termly through:

    - Termly, summative reports (December, March and July)

    - Parent consultation evenings (held termly)

    - Parent curriculum open mornings and evenings

We also regularly inform our parents about what the children are learning through the weekly newsletter, our curriculum newsletter (written and shared termly), curriculum open mornings, our Twitter feed, Class Dojo, Google Classroom, regular text/emails as well as our website.

  • What are your school hours?

The school day begins at 8:30 am when our gate and classroom doors open. Registration closes at 8:45 am (any child who arrives after this time will be marked late) and the school day finishes at 3:15 pm. Our school week amounts to 32 hours and 30 minutes.

Our school office is open to parents (including phone lines) from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm.

How long do the children get for break and lunch?

All children have a 15 minute morning break and a 45 minute lunch which starts at 12.00 pm.

  • What do I do if I am going to be late collecting my child?

We ask that you please inform the school office as soon as possible if this is the case.

  • What do I do if my child is unwell and unable to come to school?

On the first morning of your child’s illness, you should  call us before 9:00 am on 01702 546237 to inform us of the absence. You must also inform us each day thereafter regarding the absence.

Please see further information about absence and attendance by visiting our attendance page or viewing our attendance policy.

  • What do I do if my child needs medication whilst in school?

Where clinically possible, medicines should be prescribed in dose frequencies which enable them to be taken outside school hours. Where this is not possible, we may agree to administer medicine to children only if:

    - It would be detrimental to the child’s health or school attendance not to do so

    - A permission form has been completed by the parent (these can be accessed in person via our office) and

    - The medicine is in date, in the original packaging (including the patient information leaflet) and for prescription medication, a pharmacy label is affixed in the name of the child

If the medication is for a long term health issue, then you will also be asked to complete a Healthcare Plan in conjunction with the school.

Please also note that the school will not administer pain medication (ie. Calpol) without prescription.

  • What happens if my child has an accident/is injured at school?

We have many first aid trained staff in school and their training is updated regularly. We treat all injuries in line with our First Aid Policy and treatment is usually carried out/administered in our office.

If your child has had a head injury (ie. A bump, fall, etc…) they receive a form to take home about the injury. All teachers will be notified of a head injury. Parents are also called immediately to make them aware if necessary.

As a matter of course, we inform all parents as soon as possible regarding injuries.

  • Can I take my child on holiday during term time?

The short answer is no. Attending school is a compulsory obligation that parents must adhere to in accordance with education law and you should therefore avoid taking your child out of school. Please also consult our attendance and leave of absence policies.

  • How much is a school dinner? How do I order one?

Universal infant free school meals (UIFSM) provides funding for all government funded schools to offer free school meals to pupils in reception, year 1, and year 2.

School meals for Nursery and Key Stage 2 pupils cost £2.20 per day and can be paid for through School Money. Your child can order a school dinner each morning as the register is taken. Our school office will invoice you for ordered school lunches daily.

If your child has school dinners, we ask that your account is always kept in credit. If your account falls in arrears, we may ask that you bring in an alternative lunch for your child until arrears have been cleared.

If you feel you are entitled to free school meals, please contact the school office, who will be willing to help.

  • Can my child wear jewellery in school?

We ask that pupils do not wear jewellery in school. We operate a strict uniform policy.

  • Can my child walk to and from school alone?

We encourage all pupils to be collected by a responsible and familiar adult. We do, however, permit pupils in Years 5 and 6 to go home from school alone. Permission must be sought by parents in advance and there is a permission form for all parents to fill out, which is shared with parents in Years 5 and 6 termly. Ultimately the decision to allow your child to go/walk home alone is a decision made by the family – if we have concerns about going home arrangements, a member of the school leadership team will be in contact with you.

  • Is my child allowed a mobile phone?

Pupils are strictly forbidden from having a mobile phone on school property. If your child walks home alone they may wish to carry a phone with them and all phones must be dropped off to the school office first thing in the morning, every single day. Phones can be collected via the school office as children are leaving the school premises at the end of the day,  before they head home.
